Due to its construction, using spheres, the load is focused at the position that the ball contacts the inner race (this is referred to as POINT contact) meaning they can run at high speeds. Ball and Roller Bearings can support both radial (perpendicular to the shaft) and axial loads (parallel to the shaft). For lightly-loaded bearings, balls offer lower friction than rollers. Ball and Roller Bearings can operate when the bearing races are misaligned.

 

A typical application for this bearing would be the internals of a turbocharger where the ability to cope with high speeds and acceleration are at a premium.
